The ungulate sector uses seven classes, like the others. In addition to class and subclass, the system indicates the ungulate species to which the classification refers. Capability for ungulate production implies a sufficient quantity and quality of food, protective cover, and space to meet the needs for survival, growth, and reproduction. Capability mapping is accomplished through interpretation of air photographs and by field surveys. Capability ratings are also established on the basis of the optimum vegetational stage that can be maintained with good wildlife management practices. Purpose: Assigning land units to a capability class serves as both an inventory tool for landuse planning and wildlife habitat protection. La cartographie des propriétés physiques des terres qui les rendent propres à servir d'habitat aux ongulés est établie dans le respect d'un système national de classification élaboré en collaboration avec le Service canadien de la faune et les organismes provinciaux de la faune. Comme les autres secteurs, le secteur des ongulés présente sept classes. Outre la classe et la sous-classe, le système indique l'espèce d'ongulés à laquelle renvoie la classification. Pour assurer la reproduction, la survie et la croissance des ongulés, une zone géographique donnée doit receler leurs nutriments en quantité et en qualité suffisantes, leur habitat et leur espace requis en quantités nécessaires. La cartographie des possibilités des terres pour la faune se fonde sur l'interprétation de cartes aériennes et des résultats d'études effectuées sur le terrain. Des cotes d'aptitude sont également établies en fonction du couvert végétal optimum qui peut être maintenu grâce à de bonnes pratiques de gestion de la faune.
