2.2.2 Vertebrate species diversity module
2.2.2.1 Vertebrate species
Canada has about 700 species of vertebrates, consisting of 95 reptiles/ amphibians, 450 birds and 185 mammals.
2.2.2.2 Ecoregion-species table
If you are interested to know what species are found in a particular ecoregion, click on an ecoregion below to find out which terrestrial vertebrate species may be found there. Be careful not to assume that a species is located everywhere within the ecoregion. Each species will have its own particular habitat requirements that will influence its distribution.
2.2.2.3 Species-ecoregion table
If you are interested to know the distribution of a particular vertebrate species, click on the species name below. You will obtain a list of the code numbers of the ecoregions where these species occur. You will need to consult the ecoregion table to determine the actual names of the ecoregion of occurrence.
Each species has a particular distribution. Among terrestrial vertebrate species (i.e., land-based species with backbones) more diversity is found in southern Canada which possesses climatic conditions that favour more species. In fact, reptiles and amphibians are not found at all in the most northern arctic ecoregions. These maps shows the diversity of Canada's 600 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians by ecoregion.
